City logistics

What to plan around in Madison

Madison's isthmus layout, the UW campus, and a calendar of downtown events all shape how a move runs. Most of these factors come down to timing and access, which are easiest to settle before the truck arrives.

01

Parking and curb access

Check where a truck can stop near both addresses, and ask about loading zones, time limits, or alley access if the street is busy or metered. Confirm the parking plan with the team before move day.

02

Apartments and elevators

Ask property management about elevator reservations, freight doors, and stairwell access, since rules vary from building to building. Confirm the loading window you are allowed, and pass those details along when you book.

03

Timing around campus

Peak lease turnover near the university and busy event weekends concentrate moves across the city at the same time each year. Once you pick a date, share it early so the truck and crew can be scheduled around the busiest stretches.

04

Weather and seasons

Wisconsin weather can bring snow, ice, or summer heat on move day. Keep a clear, dry path from door to truck, protect floors from wet shoes, and ask the team about a covered loading spot if storms are in the forecast.

Common move types

How typical Madison moves differ

Each move type has a different center of gravity: an apartment move turns on access, a household move on inventory, an office move on sequencing. Knowing which one you are planning changes what you prepare first.

Apartment moves

Apartments and campus buildings

Apartment moves usually hinge on the building, not the box count. Confirm elevator reservations or stair access, book a window that works with lease turnover dates, and keep hallways and landings clear so the crew can move through shared spaces without delays.

Household moves

Houses and townhomes

Household moves pair a full inventory with two access points to coordinate, since the current home and the next one rarely load the same way. Match the crew size to the total, and schedule around school, work, or daycare so the day flows around your family.

Office moves

Offices and small businesses

Office relocations work best when furniture, desks, and files are sequenced and labeled before the crew arrives. Confirm building hours and freight access at both ends, and time the heaviest items around the moments your team needs the space least.

A Madison checklist for move week

Run through these items in the days before your move and ask the team anything you are unsure about. Most are quick to check but slow to fix on the day itself.

  1. 01

Confirm where the truck can load at each address and tell the crew about any gated, alley, or reserved-spot process.

  2. 02

Reserve the service elevator, freight door, or loading dock with your building if the property requires it.

  3. 03

Share the details on stairs, long carries, narrow doorways, and any access codes the crew will need.

  4. 04

Check your date against campus move-in windows, downtown events, and other major local activity before it is final.

  5. 05

Prepare a weather-ready path from door to truck, and keep anything you are holding back in a dry, safe spot.

From my initial contact with the coordinator to my move with the crew, I had a great experience. This was my first interstate move by myself (from one state to another) and Scherer Moving & Storage made it easy. They were considerate, polite, careful with my belongings. I would highly recommend Scherer Moving & Storage for your moving needs.

Scherer Moving & Storage were contracted by a furniture retailer to deliver my mattress. The mattress was a king size almost 500lbs beast that needed to be taken down to the basement. The two guys were prompt, quick, and friendly. They were able to squeeze it through a tighter stairwell with no damage. Great guys, super appreciative of their work.

For the most part the move was conducted professionally, quickly and efficiently. My only issue was the improper packing of two bags which I had set aside from the material to be moved as they were to be my luggage for both the next week and an upcoming trip. Despite being requested they did not find where those bags had been packed on the truck not contacted me later to let me know if my luggage had been found. For this reason, I am giving them a 4 star instead of 5 star review.

The guys were very fast, professional, and friendly. They did a great job. They were very positive the whole time even though it was a Sunday and was raining. I would definitely recommend Scherer Moving & Storage.:)

They didn't come when promised, twice. Sent two guys and a small woman to move a 300 pound filing cabinet up 4 stairs into the house. They didn't bring a truck to haul off items for trash as promised, then called more guys who brought a full truck, then smashed the furniture for removal all over my driveway and left shards of wood and screws all over the driveway. If I hadn't noticed and swept I'd likely gotten a flat tire. Only upside is they were polite and got the job done once they finally came. Update: The owner offered me my money back as an apology for his staff's behavior so I'm adding a star.
